The Hanky of Pippin's Daughter by Rosmarie Waldrop; Ben Lerner (Introduction by)

$38.00 AUD

Category: Fiction

"Wonderfully, relentlessly absorbing, Hanky's several overlapping tales leave one marvelling at the beauty, economy, and humor with which Waldrop interweaves the complex tensions of Hitler's Germany in a family drama of repeated infidelity. Delightfully rich and bawdy and as strong-willed as its charact ers." - Lydia Davis"Josef and Frederika Seifert made a bad marriage - he so metaphysical, she, furious frustrated singer, furious frustrated femme fatale, unfaithful within two months of the wedding day. The setting is small town Germany between the wars; the Seiferts are just those 'ordinary people' who helped Hitler rise, bequeathing their daughter, who tells their story, a legacy of grief and guilt. Rosmarie Waldrop's haunting novel, superbly intelligent, evocative and strange, reverberates in the memory for a long time, a song for the dead, a judgment." - Angela Carter ...Show more

Argosy by Bella Li

$35.00 AUD

Category: Poetry

Drawing inspiration from the surrealist collage novels of Max Ernst, Bella Li's debut full-length collection Argosy is an arresting and utterly unique assemblage of poetry, collage and photography. In two parts, the book engages with themes of travel and exploration, language and loss, identity and orig inality, as well as the relationship between poetry and other disciplines: the visual arts, history, literature and film. Polyglot in sensibility and content, and daring in construction, Argosy defies categorisation. Grounded firmly in Australian contemporary poetic practice, it constitutes a landmark in both local and international poetics. 'Li is a cartographer of a different kind. Her map-making is as aesthetic as it is topographic, plotting fragmented histories, horizons and the spectral lands of memory and dream.' Tamryn Bennett, Mascara Literary Review Bella Li is the author of the chapbook Maps, Cargo (Vagabond Press, 2013), shortlisted for the Wesley Michel Wright Prize. ...Show more

Pond by Claire-Louise Bennett

$12.99 AUD

Category: Fiction

Bennett's debut is a slim volume that eschews traditional narrative conventions. It may be read as 20 mostly interlinked stories or as a novella fractured into twenty parts. It is narrated by a nameless woman living in a small cottage in rural Ireland. Its sections vary in length, with some as short as a few sentences, and each offers the reader insight into the quiet domestic existence of Bennett's narrator. Instead of relating a straightforward narrative she progresses via digression: celebrating the arrangement of fruits and vegetables in bowls on the window-sill, lamenting the broken knobs on her kitchen's mini-stove, pondering the deeper meaning of a novel about the last woman on Earth, recalling past sexual misadventures and experiments in gardening plots. The reader inhabits the narrator's consciousness, gradually creating a picture of a young woman of uncommon intelligence who has left the world of jobs and adult responsibility in the hope of recovering some more enchanting relation of self to world. The result is a series of tableaus - funny, acute, melancholy, misanthropic - whose charm and beauty lays in their oblique angle of approach. ...Show more
